Metris Inaugurates New Facility
Metris has inaugurated a new manufacturing facility in Manasssas, Virginia, centralizing production of all its large-volume metrology products. The new facility merges two former offices that originally served as headquarters to ArcSecond and MetricVision, respectively, before Metris acquired both firms in recent years. The 30,000-square-foot facility houses 60 employees and is located in Prince William Technology Park on Innovation Drive.

Mori Seiki USA has announced the winners of the 2008 Innovation of the Americas machining competition, which is designed to recognize talented machinists in the metalworking industry. Four professionals from reputable industry organizations and universities, led by Professor Kazuo Yamazaki of the University of California, Davis, judged more than 130 entries in four categories. The entries represented a wide range of materials, sizes and shapes, and were of such high quality that selecting winners was challenging for the judges.

Despite grim financial news, an unprecedented number of attendees filled the halls on the opening day of the 2008 Fabtech International & AWS Welding Show, introducing Metalform. More than 12,000 manufacturing and welding professionals attended opening day of the show’s debut in Las Vegas, and attendance for the entire three-day event amounted to more than 21,000. This year marks the first time Fabtech has taken place west of the Mississippi, and it attracted a new audience—56 percent were first-time attendees.

Machine tool and laser manufacturer Trumpf has assumed control of SPI Lasers, a designer and manufacturer of optical fiber-based lasers for material processing applications. The bid became effective after SPI shareholders approved the sale of more than 90 percent of the companies shares to Trumpf. The company says SPI’s broad product range will complement its product portfolio, and it plans to maintain and expand the merchant laser sales channel established by SPI.

Founded in 1948 by Heinz Kaiser, the company specializes in the development and manufacturing of high-precision modular tooling systems. Attendees toured the Kaiser facility in small groups, giving them the chance to observe the high precision and quality control checks that go into producing Kaiser tools, the company says.
