Surfware Opens Demo, Training Center
Surfware, developer of SurfCAM Velocity CAD/CAM systems, has opened a new demo and training center in Camarillo, California. The facility will serve many functions, including a role as a multimedia center where live demonstrations of the company’s TrueMill and SurfCAM software will be filmed and made available via the Surfware Web site, YouTube and other communication outlets. Live Webcasts broadcast from the center will allow viewers worldwide to see demonstrations of TrueMill in high speed titanium cutting applications on a Haas machine.

In coordination with the upcoming release of its Vericut 7 machine simulation software, CGTech (Irvine, California) has scheduled 17 North American Vericut User’s Exchange (VUE) events in 2009. In addition to an introduction to new features and tips and tricks for improving efficiency, the events will provide attendees with an opportunity to express ideas about the future direction to the software. After the events, one attendee from North America will be selected at random to win 2 days of on-site training and consulting for his or her company.

The Nuts, Bolts & Thingamajigs Foundation (NBTF) has partnered with the Fabricators & Manufacturers Association, International (FMA) to create a new organization dedicated to inspiring America’s youth to consider careers in manufacturing. The charitable entity, dubbed Nuts, Bolts & Thingamajigs, the Foundation of the Fabricator’s and Manufacturer’s Association, International, will be based in Rockford, Illinois, which also houses the FMA headquarters. The new entity offers grants to non-profit organizations and educational institutions that introduce young people to manufacturing careers; provides funding to organizations that start or expand youth manufacturing camps; and issues scholarships to students pursuing manufacturing careers at colleges and trade schools.

Rather than requiring customers to visit its showroom, Haimer USA (Villa Park, Illinois) is using a new demonstration vehicle to bring its showroom to its customers. Mounted on the chassis of the GMC Top Kick C4500 diesel is a 6-by-10-foot traveling showcase that features the company’s latest shrink-fit toolholders, tool-balancing machines and other products. According to the company, conservative estimates show that 30 to 35 percent of potential customers who see a demonstration on the truck actually make purchases.
