Conference To Showcase Metrology Success Stories

The Coordinate Metrology Society, a membership association for measurement professionals, has announced its “Call for Papers” for the 25th Coordinate Metrology Systems Conference (CMSC). Metrology users from leading manufacturers and science laboratories are invited to submit abstracts for white papers illustrating their successful application of 3D coordinate measuring systems. Submissions will be reviewed by the society and considered for presentation at CMSC, an annual event scheduled for July 20-24, 2009 in Louisville, Kentucky.

Emuge, Hermle Collaborate On Equipment Demos

Emuge (West Boylston, Massachusetts) and Hermle Machine Company (Franklin, Wisconsin) have announced a cooperative effort to streamline customer-specific demonstrations of specialized tooling capabilities. The program includes the placement of a Hermle series C 30 U five-axis machining center at the Emuge technical center in West Boylston, as well as the permanent assignment of a Hermle applications engineer to that facility. Peter Matysiak, president of Emuge, says a generic demonstration would not be sufficient to show off the capabilities of the company’s taps, milling tools and other products because they are often used in challenging applications involving advanced materials and alloys.

MAG Expands VMC Production

In response to changes in the global economic environment, Erlanger, Kentucky-based MAG Industrial Automation Systems is adjusting its product portfolio, production sites, sales and technical support network to improve its position in the VMC segment. The company says it will develop larger 2- and 3-meter models of recently introduced VMC product lines, which will be introduced in October 2009 at the upcoming EMO show in Milan, Italy. In the first quarter of 2009, the company’s Chatsworth, California facility will increase VMC production to shorten delivery times, says Mark Logan, vice president of business development and marketing for MAG Americas.

EMO Exhibitors Seem Undeterred By Recession

As of December 2008, 1,000 companies had finalized their attendance to EMO Milano 2009, booking a net exhibition area of about 100,000 square meters. As many as 65 percent of companies confirming their attendance hail from abroad, a figure that emphasizes the international character of the event, promoters say. Approximately 200,000 visitors are expected to attend the international metalworking exhibition, which will showcase technology ranging from metal cutting, metal forming, and cutting tools to auxiliary equipment and automation.

Flow Acquires Stake In Chinese Waterjet Builder

Waterjet manufacturer Flow International has completed a $2 million purchase of a minority ownership position in Dardi International Corporation, China’s leading waterjet manufacturer. Privately held Dardi is the largest-volume waterjet producer in Asia and has three factories located near Nanjing. Flow announced its intent to purchase the minority position in November after introducing Dardi as the new supplier of its economy segment product line.

The Shop Rat Foundation, an organization in Pleasant Lake, Michigan dedicated to the advancing the skilled trade industries by offering hands-on education programs for young people, has endorsed successful national youth programs offered by the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) Education Foundation. The broader educational goal of these industry collaborations is to address the need for a skilled workforce by offering a full range of technology-based curriculum designed to appeal to young people. Initial plans are to introduce new curriculum at youth-based engineering programs offered by the SME Education Foundation.
