Accuracy Gain From Linear Encoders

If the position of a machine tool’s axis is measured using a rotary encoder, then potentially the ballscrew is being asked to perform two contradictory functions. The ballscrew both drives the axis into position and indicates that position—because the ballscrew lies in between the encoder and the moving element of the machine. Control technology supplier Heidenhain calls this “semiclosed-loop” operation.

Optimal Milling Strategy For Entering Material From The Side

These animations show why an arc in the same direction as tool rotation is effective. The strategy is relevant for entering material from the edge, as well as for pocketing.

Grinding Turbine Rotors Has Advantages

For many aerospace components, grinding systems achieve greater productivity than milling and broaching on today’s lighter, tougher, harder materials. Tests performed at Saint-Gobain Abrasives’ Higgins Grinding Technology Center in Worcester, Massachusetts, showed that along with the latest abrasive and bonding technologies, the systems approach produced remarkable results when applied to grinding turbine rotor root-form slots.

JIMTOF Report: From the Field

The Japan International Machine Tool Fair (JIMTOF) is Japan’s most important machine tool show. The 2008 show reinforced the trends observed at the International Manufacturing Technology Show (IMTS) that took place in Chicago two months earlier. Along with a review of the show, this article summarizes editorial visits to two new machine tool factories. The report shows that Japan continues to be a dynamic force in machine design and construction.

Multitasking Tools Cut More Than Grooves

Once, grooving tools were only thought of for making grooves or cutting off the part. Improved designs, materials and coatings make them perfect sense as all-purpose tools under the right conditions.
