Despite Recession, New Markets Offer Opportunities
A recently conducted economic survey of industrial businesses across the United States suggests that while the automotive, semiconductor, electrical components and other sectors have been hard-hit by the economic slowdown, companies still see opportunities in new markets, green initiatives and industries such as biotech, energy and aerospace/defense. The survey, titled “How Industrial Companies Can Succeed in the Current Economy,” was conducted in January by GlobalSpec, a vertical search engine and business resource for industrial professionals. The company says the survey results provide a benchmark against which companies can measure their current situations and activities.

Machine tool builder Mazak says it recently completed a significant expansion in size and capabilities at its manufacturing facility in Florence, Kentucky. In addition to adding 50,000 square feet of floor space to the 543,000-square-foot campus, the company has installed two Versatech V100N multiple-surface, double-column, five-axis machining centers. With a spindle head that can be configured for operation in the horizontal or vertical positions or any angle in between, these machines are said to be especially useful for large workpieces.

To fund its machining technology scholarship program, the Gene Haas Foundation has provided a $200,000 grant to the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) Education Foundation. Ranging from $1,000 to $5,000 each, the one-year scholarships are awarded through the latter foundation to qualified high school seniors, graduates and GED recipients interested in machine operation and maintenance coursework. The scholarships complement work performed at the Haas Technical Education Center (HTEC).

The facility will serve many functions, including a role as a multimedia center where live demonstrations of the company’s TrueMill and SurfCAM software will be filmed and made available via the Surfware Web site, YouTube and other communication outlets. Live Webcasts broadcast from the center will allow viewers worldwide to see demonstrations of TrueMill in high speed titanium cutting applications on a Haas machine.

Xspect Solutions (Wixom, Michigan) has introduced a new rental program for X-Orbit CMMs produced in the United States. Keith Mills, president of Xspect Solutions, says the program was created to help manufacturers that are struggling to justify new capital equipment purchases as program schedules and quantities for parts suppliers shrink. Through the Rent2Measure program, manufacturers can use a Wenzel X-Orbit CMM with a Renishaw PH10T/TP20 probe on their shop floors for 6 to 36 months.
