In addition to the original 12-mm insert, Iscar Helido Round H400 fine-pitch mills offer 10- and 16-mm inserts to improve profile machining and ramping over a range of applications. Matching cutters measure 1" and 1.25" in diameter for end mills and 1.5" to 4" in diameter for face mills.

Unlike true rounds, these inserts have a periphery consisting of bounding arcs with radii that would be found on pure rounds twice their size, the company says. Each insert has four 120-degree arcs that enable the cutters to increase their number of flutes, which results in increased feed capability. The double-sided inserts feature helical cutting edges designed for gentle entry, and top-face geometry creates 10-degree positive-rake inclination. Sumo Tec post-coating treatment is said to improve performance.

The cutter’s dovetail clamping design directs forces to the body, which relieves the clamping screw of the impact loads. The insert shape creates four fixed indexing positions per side and firmer, no-twist seating able to withstand high cutting forces, the company says. Fixed indexing positions also ensure that all four edges are used and eliminate the uncertainties that lead to discarding of rounds that still have good edges, the company says.
