Skills Shortage Restricts Reshoring Gains
A new report from MFG.com (Atlanta, Georgia) indicates that the lack of skilled machinists could be preventing American manufacturers from taking advantage of industrial growth spurred in part by increased amounts of work coming back to the United States. The “Job Shop Health & Capacity Report,” released in April, surveyed more than 250 U.S. job shops.

The SME Education Foundation recently made two $25,000 grants geared toward promoting partnerships between manufacturers and educational institutions in order to help address the shortage of skilled workers. The first grant went to the Science Center of Pinellas County, Florida, for a new Design Engineering and Manufacturing Education Program that will provide middle and high school students with the opportunity to obtain MSSC (Manufacturing Skill Standards Council) Production Technician Certification.
