The Puma MX series turn-mill adds milling capabilities to the company’s Infracore turning center. The machine’s design is intended to provide flexibility within a complete spectrum of part geometries. From simple turning or milling to complex, simultaneous, multi-axis machining, complex parts can be produced on one machine in a single setup. According to the company, the dual-spindle, multitasking machine is built for heavy and interrupted cuts, long-term accuracy and quality finishes.

The twelve-station turning-tool turret is non-lifting to protect the coupling from chips and other contaminants and indexes from station to station in 0.2 second. Live or static tools can be mounted at any station and oriented toward either the main or sub spindle. Live tools are powered by a 7.5-hp motor with a maximum speed of 4,000 rpm. Polar coordinate, helical and cylindrical interpolations are standard. Depending on the model selected, the turning spindle is powered by a 25-hp, 35-hp or 40-hp motor and driven at speeds from 3,000 to 5,000 rpm.  The motor is built into the headstock casting with the armature on the spindle OD. This beltless design is said to eliminate backlash, feedback error and vibration. The milling spindle is powered by a 25-hp motor and generates spindle speeds to 10,000 rpm.

Standard on the Puma MX is a floating 40-tool ATC, and a fixed, 80-station ATC is optional. Tool-to-tool change time is 1.5 seconds. Also standard are an automatic tool setter to measure tool offsets and the company’s Infracore tool monitoring system, which monitors spindle and axis load—both overload and underload—while the axis is feeding.
