Sumitomo’s new PSZ Turn quick-change system for Swiss lathes is designed for users facing challenges such as high setup effort for tool changes and poor accessibility when changing tools and inserts. The PSZ Turn is said to feature good ergonomics and efficiency by offering a fast, reliable process and convenient cassette changes. The PSZ Turn System is designed for multipurpose for all gang-tool, multi-spindle lathes and consists of a diverse product lineup offering for front-turning, grooving, thread-cutting and back-turning applications.
The new system offers the same stability as monoblock systems for best process, reliability and reduced vibration. The PSZ Turn has internal through-coolant holders which deliver precise cooling directly on the cutting edge. The through-coolant holders also allow for improved chip control and reliability. The shanks for PSZ Turn is stocked in both inch and metric sizes and both are suitable for all the heads offered in the program. Finally, for those customers seeking additional machining requirements, the PSZ Turn System also has gang plates available as a custom-order item.
Sumitomo is also offering the MEFF Chipbreaker, which provides versatility in Swiss-type machining applications such as outer-diameter (OD) turning, back turning, chamfering, tapering, profiling and more.
According to Sumitomo, the MEFF Chipbreaker is ideal for small parts machining, and it can also be used in similar fine-finishing applications. The new chipbreaker features great chip control in very fine finishing, where depth of cut (ap) is less than 0.020" and feed rate (fz) is less than 0.002" per revolution. Featuring a unique chipbreaker design with multiple ridges, a wavy cutting edge and high rake, the MEFF Chipbreaker is said to enable excellent chip control, low cutting force and good surface finish in different depth of cuts.
MEFF Chipbreaker is available in the following Sumitomo grades: AC5015S (1st choice for HRSA, titanium alloy, hardened steel and bearing steel), AC5025S (tough grade for interrupted cutting of HRSA) and AC1030U (ideal for steel and stainless steel). Sumitomo’s test results of the MEFF Chipbreaker reportedly indicated improved wear resistance and surface finish in materials steel, stainless steel and Inconel. Finally, the MEFF Chipbreaker also delivers energy savings with significantly increased productivity by better chip control thus greatly reducing power consumption and CO2 emissions.
