Mitsubishi Materials’ VQ-XL Series three- and four-flute end mills enable the machining of precision hexalobular (T4, T6, T8, T15, T25 and T40) shapes common to bone screws in a two-step process: drill, then helical mill. The mills are said to promote size stability and quality finish of bone screws while reducing cycle time, and are also suitable for automotive and other medical applications including small precision slots and high-volume applications.

The end mills range from 0.2 to 1 mm in diameter and feature unique bottom-edge geometry, short flute length and relieved neck shanks. The three and four-flute mills deliver increases in feed rates compared with conventional two-flute products, the company says. VQ-XL substrates are shielded with Smart Miracle PVD coatings for stability and quality finishes when Mitsubishi Materials helical machining strategies are followed, the company says.
