2023 Version of CAM Software Adds New Features, Ease of Use
As a part of Sandvik Design and Planning Automation, GibbsCAM introduces PrimeTurning for optimized bi-directional cutting, as well as expanded capabilities in milling, cylindrical milling, turning, spiral boring, elliptical contour for inside diameters and thread turning.
Following its showcase at IMTS 2022, GibbsCAM launches the 2023 version of its Simply Powerful CAM software, highlighting its new features and capabilities.
One of the major developments for this updated version is the introduction of PrimeTurning, a high-performance turning strategy for Sandvik Coromant and CoroTurn Prime Type A and Type B inserts which enables optimum feed rate adjustment for accurate cutting in either direction.
To define the 3D geometry of the tool inserts more accurately, the GibbsCAM GO Turning feature can now specify rake and back relief for tool inserts. VoluTurn’s update includes Active Chip Thickness Control, enabling the manipulation of the maximum thickness of the chips to increase productivity by optimizing cutting feed rates. An option for Lathe Drilling is also added. The Lathe Drilling feature possesses counter-rotating tools instructing the live tooling spindle to turn in the opposite direction at a specified RPM to increase spindle speed and material removal rates.
The Elliptical Contour process may now be used for elliptical bores inside of solid parts. Thread turning operations are expanded with Face Threading, Variable Pitch Threading, Multi-pitch and Position Tool Front options. A new tool type, the Multifunction Insert Drill, is included as a periphery insert that can seamlessly switch between turning, lathe drilling and mill drilling without retraction or tool change motions, according to GibbsCam.
With the direct selection of a part slice in the depth axis, cylindrical milling in GibbsCAM 2023 is designed to be easier. Users can select a closed profile to machine a cylindrical boss or pocket or select two loops to machine a groove or ring.
New Spiral Boring cuts a spiral out to the full diameter at each Z step, increasing cutting feed rate and depth due to a more consistent tool load.
To match the way users work, organizing parts is designed to be easier than ever, according to GibbsCAM. The ability to earmark parts by work group or coordinate system, create operation groups and specify active and inactive operations helps users to track part information throughout the CAM process.
