Turning Machines
Turning Is Optional
The part requires only milling and drilling, but it is still run on a lathe. Except for the cutoff tool, all of the turret positions on this lathe hold rotating tools. In other words, turning is not essential for using a lathe effectively. This application illustrates the productive possibilities of a modern turn-mill machine.

Ikegai Corporation’s TU30 CNC lathe with slant-bed features a rigid, four-way bed and a 6" (150-mm) diameter main spindle. The stepless spindle speed changes in low-speed range and high-speed range (between 6 and 2,500 rpm). The 45-degree slant-bed facilitates efficient chip disposal, and doors open from both sides to ensure easy operability, the company says.

Combining different machining processes on the same platform has been a major theme in machine tool design for two decades or so. The Studer S242 combines cylindrical grinding and hard turning. A look at this machine shows that both of these machining processes benefit when they share the same platform.
