Tour of Kellenberger's Large Part Machining Center
Kellenberger’s new production center for complete machining of large workpieces is located in the Swiss town of Romanshorn, literally “down the hill” from the company’s main factory and headquarters in St. Gallen.
The grand opening of the Romanshorn facility was hosted by Jürg Kellenberger (left), president of L. Kellenberger Co. AG; Rick Simons, president and CEO of Hardinge, Inc. and Bruno Schmucki, Kellenberger's Director Manufacturing, who greeted invited guests with a smile.
The Waldrich Coburg grinder in operation here is believed to be one of only six such machines in all of Switzerland. This machine provides capacity for high precision grinding of large workpieces such as the bases for Kellenberger’s line of precision grinders. A second Waldrich Coburg grinder will be installed by year’s end.
Stacks of grinder base castings are stored in the production center near the grinding and milling machines. The climate-controlled environment of the building promotes ideal conditions for high-precision production.
The foundation for a second Waldrich Coburg grinder is complete. This machine was originally installed at a satellite plant in St. Gallen, which Kellenberger recently relinquished. It is being completely rebuilt to like-new condition by the OEM in Germany.
A state-of-the-art centralized coolant filtration and chilling system is located under the main floor at the rear of the building. Because the site is sloped, this portion of the building has direct access to loading docks.
