VMC Enables Unattended Operations
Mazak’s Variaxis i-700 vertical machining center accurately processes long parts as well as those with complex profiled surfaces in single setups.
Mazak’s Variaxis i-700 vertical machining center accurately processes long parts as well as those with complex profiled surfaces in single setups. With X- and Y-axis travels measuring 23.62", the VMC accommodates workpieces ranging to 33.46" in diameter and 19.68" in height. Its roller-gear, cam-driven rotary/tilt table is supported at both ends and provides stable, high-accuracy machining. The table offers 360 degrees of rotation in the C axis and +30 to -120 degrees of tilt in the A axis. Rapid traverse rates are 2,362 ipm in the X and Y axes, and 2,205 ipm in the Z axis. The MX hybrid roller guide system is designed to increase vibration damping, extend tool life, handle higher load capacities and eliminate tramp oil in the coolant by utilizing a grease-based lubrication system.
An 18,000-rpm, 30-hp, 40-taper spindle features a compact nose design that helps increase the machine’s Z-axis stroke to 23.62" and promote overall machining stability by enabling the use of shorter tools. A 30-tool automatic toolchanger adds part processing flexibility and contributes to continuous non-interrupted machining operations, the company says. The VMC is controlled with Mazak’s Matrix 2 CNC for optimized five-axis machining. The control’s software features a five-axis spline interpolation function said to provide smooth tool paths from long block-by-block programs, easy tool vector control and shorter cycle times, as well as improved five-axis surface finishes.
The machine can be paired with a two-pallet changer, enabling operators to load, unload and inspect a part on one pallet while the machine continues to work on a part fixtured to the other pallet. When equipped with the pallet changer and Mazak’s PMC-WEB cell controller, the VMC can also be integrated with the company’s Palletech automation system and HMCs to create a manufacturing cell for lights-out operations.
