Valenite offers the ValGroove VTG-RG full radius, twin cutting edge inserts. The tools are useful for multiple operations, including profiling, turning and facing in addition to precision grooving and undercutting. According to the company, the capability to perform these various applications can reduce the need for secondary processes as well as the number of required tool changes and machine setups.
The inserts are available in three grades: the multi-layer PVD TiAlN-coated VP5820 grade for low to medium feed rates; the CVD TiCN/Al203/TiN-coated VP5735 grade for medium to high feed rates and interrupted cuts; and the uncoated VPUK20 grade for general machining. Inch sizes range from 5/64" to 5/16", and metric sizes range from 2 to 8 mm. According to the company, the top form and cutting edge geometry provide strength and minimize cutting forces, which can improve accuracy, chip control and surface finish. In addition, the clamping design of the holders for the inserts, which feature cutting surfaces at both ends, provides greater lateral stability and rigidity than single-edge tooling systems, the company says. This can reduce vibration and chatter.
