Hanwha Machinery’s XD42 Swiss-type lathe is designed to enable the production of larger-diameter parts. The 42-mm (1.653") machine with a guide bushing offers an alternative for producing some parts that were previously too large for a standard Swiss-type machine, especially in the automotive industry, the company says. The XD42 is an efficient model for setting tools a short distance from the center of headstock, making it a workhorse with familiar tooling layout, though without a turret.

The machine’s overall stability is made possible by the structure of the bearings and toggles on the main and subspindles, strong chucking force by a large hydraulic cylinder, and a highly rigid single-piece casting bed design. The horizontal gang-type design offers a stable base and easy chip removal. Cross and back tools are available with ER20M as an option and a powerful motor (cross drill: 2.2 kW, 8 Nm; back drill: 1 kW, 3 Nm). An off-center drill next to the subspindle is powered by gears rather than belts. The new XD42 offers the option of a bar-lifting unit for the automatic loading and replenishing of heavy barstock. The machine is equipped with two anti-vibration units that are designed for the V block (hybrid static block) to guide the barstock efficiently. Options include specialized tools, a chip conveyor and a larger coolant tank.
