The company offers CMM styli with drilled silicon nitride balls measuring1-mm or larger. Silicon nitride is an extremely hard hybrid ceramic (Si3N4) with a low coefficient of friction, which lends itself to a quality polished finish. Silicon nitride balls are commonly used in machine tool spindle bearings and aircraft flap actuators to provide longer service life, the company says.
