Sharp Industries’ model UH3 horizontal milling machine offers a universal table that is well-suited for gear cutting. The table measures 51" × 11.8" and offers travels of 37.3" × 14.8" and 90 degrees of swivel. A motorized gear box drives the table, saddle and knee for feed and rapid traverse. The table is supported on two hardened and ground box ways for greater rigidity. An automatic lubrication system ensures all ways are properly lubricated at all times.
The milling machine’s 7.5-hp motor drives a NST50 spindle providing 35 to 1,382 rpm. Equipped with arbor and arbor support, the mill enables combining several cutters on the arbor to mill complex shapes of slots and planes. Special cutters can cut grooves, bevels, radii or other sections. Using cutters that have good support from the arbor and a larger cross-sectional ara than an end mill, the horizontal mill can take heavy cuts with rapid material removal rates, says Sharp.
