Handtmann’s HBZ Trunnion five-axis horizontal machining centers are based on its HBZ AeroCell for high speed aluminum machining as well as the HBZ CompactCell. The HMC series features X-, Y- and Z-axis travels that are independent from the workpiece, and rotary and swivel C and A axes combined in an NC rotary swivel table. A single-piece machine bed and three-point floor mounting provide rigidity and process reliability. The machining center is well-suited for applications such as mold and die making, machine construction, energy and power generation, automotive, aerospace, and general metal machining, and is capable of machining materials such as aluminum, steel and titanium. They are said to improve productivity, particularly on workpieces requiring deep pockets and drilled holes.

Three models are available. The HBZ Trunnion 80 provides an 800-mm-diameter worktable with X-, Y- and Z-axis travels measuring 850 × 850 × 700 mm. Rapid traverse speeds range to 45 m/min. The HBZ Trunnion 120 offers a 1,200-mm-diameter table with X-, Y- and Z-axis travels measuring 1,270 × 1,110 × 900 mm. Travel speeds range to 60 m/min. The HBZ Trunnion 160 has a 1,600-mm-diameter table with X-, Y- and Z-axis travels measuring 1,670 × 1,350 × 1,110 mm, and rapid traverse rates ranging to 60 m/min.

The machining center is equipped with Siemens 840 D SL and Heidenhain TNC 640 controls. An additional turning option expands the machine to a five-axis milling and turning center providing 800 rpm. A pallet-changing system is also available for faster changeover of workpieces.
