Developed in conjunction with tools from Walter AG, Starrag now offers a cryogenic CO2 cooling system for its machine tools, capable of increasing productivity with high-strength materials such as high-alloy steels by as much as 70 percent, according to the company. The cryogenically-cooled process removes material in less time and at a faster rate than conventional dry cutting. Dropping to as low as 40°C, the through-spindle tool cooling reduces flank wear, enabling an increase in cutting speed ranging to 400 m/min. and in feed per tooth ranging to 0.55 mm. The cooling system is available for new machines but almost every Starrag machine can be retrofitted, the company says.
