Staffing Firm Expands Amid Skilled Worker Shortage

A National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) report compiled in conjunction with Deloitte & Touche predicts that manufacturers will need as many as 10 million new skilled workers by 2020. To address the growing shortage, Michigan-based Diversified Industrial Staffing is expanding into new markets throughout the United States. The company, which provides CNC programmers, machinists and other skilled workers to the manufacturing, construction and logistics industries, has operated in metropolitan Detroit since 1997.

Todd Palmer, owner and president, says the company is expanding outside of Michigan for several reasons: the Michigan economy isn’t as robust as it once was, technology allows the company to locate and place candidates virtually anywhere in the country, and the U.S. population is shifting from the “rust belt” to other areas. However, Mr. Palmer says the most significant factor enabling the expansion is the federal government’s implementation of the E-Verify program, which is designed to ensure that potential employees are eligible to work in this country. Using technology to verify eligibility translates to cost savings because the company no longer needs physical locations in all the cities into which it expands.
