SME Elects 2009 Officers

The Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) Education Foundation has named new officers and selected two new members to serve on its board of directors. All terms will be effective January 1, 2009.

New President Khalil S. Taraman is DIT chair of manufacturing engineering and doctor of engineering in manufacturing systems at Lawrence Technological University (LTU) in Southfield, Michigan. An officer and SME member since 1970, Mr. Taraman joined the Education Foundation in 1992 and served as chair of its nominating committee before being elected vice president in 2008.

Charles M. Chambers, appointed vice president/secretary, is vice president emeritus at LTU, where he serves as a member of the board of trustees and as a distinguished professor of science and technology. Mr. Chambers joined the Education Foundation in 2007 and chaired its nominating committee in 2008.

Peter F. Mackie, a senior financial consultant at Wells Fargo, was appointed as treasurer/chair of finance. The new assistant treasurer/vice chair of finance is Kenneth Vedra, a superintendent of Bellingham Public Schools in Bellingham, Colorado.

Newly elected members to the SME Education Foundation board of directors include F. Brian Holmes, vice president of operations at Columbia Plastics Ltd., and Brian A Ruestow, operations manager of F.W. Roberts Manufacturing Co. and a member of SME since 1975. The four directors elected or reelected to serve one- or two-year terms on the board include Pamela J. Ruschau of Leydig, Voit & Mayer, Ltd.; Albert (Al) Wavering of the National Institute of Standards & Technology; Robert T. Williams of Caterpillar; and Glen H. Pearson of Eastman Kodak Company (retired).
