Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) recently announced that its bachelor’s degree program in robotics engineering has received accreditation from ABET (formerly the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology), the organization that accredits engineering programs nationwide. The action is retroactive to October 2009.
The program, which was the first of its type in the United States when introduced in 2007, is also the first in the nation to receive this accreditation. “Our robotics engineering major was carefully crafted to produce graduates who can design the next generation of robotics systems, advance the science and technology behind robots and found and lead tomorrow’s robotics ventures,” says WPI Provost Eric Overström.
In awarding accreditation, ABET commended WPI for collaboration among the departments of computer science, electrical and computer engineering and mechanical engineering, which jointly established the bachelor of science program. It also highlighted the enthusiasm of WPI students for the program, which has become one of the university’s 10 most popular undergraduate majors.
