VDW, the German Machine Tool Builders’ Association, reports that order bookings for Germany’s machine tool industry in the third quarter of 2013 rose by 9 percent compared with the third quarter of 2012. Domestic orders were up by 12 percent, while orders from abroad were up by 6 percent on the preceding year’s figure. The increase follows an overall drop of 6 percent over the course of the first nine months of 2013. According to Wilfried Schäfer, VDW executive director, the turnaround may be due in part to a boost from the EMO 2013 trade show, held September 16-21, in Hannover, Germany. Forming technologies in particular have been driving business, up 61 percent in the third quarter of 2013 and by 27 percent in the year as a whole, the association says.
