The 2008 International Conference on Rapid Manufacturing will feature a mixture of industrial applications and academic research in the rapid manufacturing field. Scheduled for July 9 and 10, the conference will be hosted by the Rapid Manufacturing Research Group at Loughborough Univeristy in the UK. Rapid manufacturing is an emerging technology uses 3D CAD data to directly "print" or "grow" parts in various polymeric, metallic, ceramic and organic materials. This allows companies to cost-effectively manufacturer complex components at low unit volumes. Some speculate that rapid manufacturing could enable a step-change that will ultimately result in maintaining manufacturing in high-wage economies. Aimed at both industrialists and academics, the conference is designed to interest both those already involved in rapid manufacturing and those seeking to engage with the new technology. The conference will cover process and materials issues; design opportunities; management and organizational issues; and industrial applications.
