Sandvik to Acquire the Creators of Mastercam
Sandvik recently signed an agreement to acquire CNC Software Inc., the company behind Mastercam. By acquiring CNC Software, Sandvik gains an installed base of around 270,000 licensed users, the largest in the industry, as well as a strong market reseller network and well-established partnerships with leading machine makers and tooling companies.
“This is in line with our strategic focus to grow in the digital manufacturing space, with special attention on industrial software close to component manufacturing. CAM plays a vital role in the digital manufacturing process, enabling new and innovative solutions in automated design for manufacturing,” says Stefan Widing, president and CEO of Sandvik.

Sandvik Acquiring CAD/CAM Company Cambrio
Sandvik preceded its Mastercam announcement with a prior acquisition, agreeing to acquire Cambrio and its portfolio of CAD/CAM software for manufacturing industries like automotive, transportation, energy, medical and aerospace. Cambrio will join Sandvik Manufacturing and Machining Solutions’ Design & Planning Automation division.
"This is in line with our strategic focus to grow organically and through acquisitions in the advanced manufacturing space, with special focus on industrial software close to component manufacturing, industrial metrology and additive manufacturing solutions,” says Stefan Widing, president and CEO of Sandvik. “Cambrio will enable a broadened customer offering, covering more of the total manufacturing value chain."

Hardinge to Acquire J.G. Weisser GmbH & Co.
Hardinge Inc. and J.G. Weisser GmbH & Co. KG have reached an agreement for Hardinge to acquire Weisser. Hardinge says this acquisition will enhance its turning and milling platform with a portfolio of products and technologies.
Hardinge is a global provider of high-precision, computer-controlled machine tools for hard-to-machine metal parts and advanced workholding accessories.
Weisser is a German manufacturer and turnkey solution provider of high-precision, multifunctional turning machines and turning centers, as well as automation solutions.
“Weisser is recognized for its market-leading innovations and machine designs, complementing our expanding portfolio of premium, high-precision machine tools. The business is well-positioned in many industry applications and complements the Hardinge total solution concept,” says Ryan Levenson, Hardinge CEO. “We believe there are exciting opportunities to leverage collaboration within our global sales and service network and our existing turning and milling brands. The integration of the Weisser brand and products into the Hardinge Group, especially in industries and geographies where Hardinge is well-established, will further accelerate Weisser’s growth. Carr Machine & Tool Expands Operations
Since taking over Carr Machine & Tool in 2004, Jim Carr has turned the company into a high-tech CNC shop, a process that included upgrading its ERP, obtaining AS9100D accreditation and re-focusing its interests on the aerospace, space and exploration, semiconductor, medical and defense industries.
"We support clients like Virgin Galactic, Tesla and Boom Supersonic, and serve as their first-class aerospace machine shop,” Carr says.
Carr recently moved locations within the Elk Grove Village industrial park. The new location is a 15,000 square foot high-tech facility, where the company intends to grow by adding robotic, inspection and machine technologies. According to Carr, this move will result in a 300 percent expansion of operations.
“We truly ‘live’ in this industry and believe in the direction it’s going as it pertains to innovation,” Carr says. “We want to connect with clients that have the same ambition.”

Starrag Names New Sales Manager for Mexico
Starrag has named Carlos Castro as its new sales manager in Mexico. Castro has more than 25 years of professional experience in the CNC industry, including programming, machining, application engineering, cutting, setup, sales and managing.
"My long-term goal is to consolidate Starrag Mexico as a powerful player in the Mexican market of machine tools, to build lasting relationships with existing Starrag customers and distributors and to achieve a successful and bright future for Starrag Mexico," said Castro.
