There is a reason why the industry at large has not noticed the decline in manufacturing vocational education and other manufacturing training programs as much as it otherwise might have. For years, the “excess” created by manufacturing positions being eliminated has produced the talent pool from which other manufacturers have drawn recruits. Now, that pool has run dry. To a large extent, skilled production personnel who have been displaced have been absorbed—leaving the flow of recruits out of manufacturing education as the primary source of new employees. Yet, the size of that flow has not been nearly adequate for quite a long time.
The situation is reversible, but reversing it will take time. An article I found thanks to NACFAM describes both the situation and its solution.
