The Laser Institute of America (LIA) is hosting the Industrial Laser Conference (ILC) on Wednesday, September 11, 2024, from 9:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. This event is being held in the West Building in room W190B.

The ILC highlights advancements in laser processing technologies and their applications in manufacturing. Attendees can explore a range of topics including laser marking, cutting, welding, heat treating, remote welding, cleaning and additive manufacturing. This conference poses myriad opportunities to learn about the latest developments in laser systems and their impact on various processes within the industry.

A notable feature of the ILC is that 80% of its speakers are women. The conference also includes a panel dedicated to "Women in Photonics," showcasing the contributions of women in this field and their role in advancing laser technologies.

One of the key presentations is being delivered Joy Gockel, associate professor at the Colorado School of Mines. Her talk, titled "Platform and Parameter Influences in Laser Powder Bed Fusion Additive Manufacturing," addresses the effect of changes in processing parameters and the ability to translate this knowledge from one platform to another. The results from these works can reduce the effort needed for the ability to transfer to a new platform, enabling a wider adoption of additive manufacturing.

In addition to her presentation, Gockel is participating in the "Women in Photonics" panel, highlighting the significant impact of women in the photonics industry, particularly where focused clean laser energy is utilized in new methods of advanced manufacturing.
