Leaders-In background

The CoroMill Plura routers from Sandvik Coromant are designed to optimize milling and slotting operations in composite materials such as carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) and glass fiber reinforced plastic (GFRP). The routers have been built to address the issues caused by the abrasiveness of composite materials, including rapid tool wear, compromised cutting quality, elevated temperatures, vibration and unstable cutting conditions. The routers are well-suited for three-, four- and five-axis machining centers, gantry-type CNC machines and standalone robotic arm systems in industries where these materials are prevalent, including aerospace, automotive, motorsport, wind power and marine.

The routers can be used with or without coolant in full radial engagement and at full depth of cut when milling and slotting composites. They can also be used for finishing passes in some cases. Helix angles designed for sharpness and cutting edge strength ensure longer tool life and high-quality surface, edge and slot finishes. The line includes compression, low helix and serrated routers.

The compression router, with its dual 40-degree helix, is good for special woven glass layers on both sides of CFRP components. Because the compressed flutes overlap, it reduces vibration in thin, flat materials.

Specifically designed for smooth, burr-free finishing passes, the low-helix (5-degree) router features a high number of teeth and a coating that is designed for fast cutting and heat protection. Right and left helix options enable flexibility in material with weak or compromised fixturing.

The serrated router, with its large flute form, is designed for high material removal rates. The dual cutting action reduces delamination and vibration, providing a single-pass solution to minimize stress on composite parts.
