Reformulated Adhesive Has A Longer Working Time

Devcon’s Metal Welder adhesive has been reformulated to provide a working time of 5 to 6 minutes at 72ºF. The new formula is a nonsagging, 10:1 methacrylate with a mixed viscosity of 55,000 cps. Glass beads throughout the activator optimize adhesion by providing a consistent gap of 20 mils between bonded surfaces, the company says. Designed to bond bare, painted, plated or galvanized metals to each other or to thermoplastic or composite assemblies, the adhesive requires no primers and minimal surface preparation. It is also said to produce durable bonds with impact and peel resistance.
The product is useful for bonding sheet metal where dimpling or scorching because of welding is unacceptable. When manufacturing vehicles, appliances, electronics and other products, bonding reduces the need to punch or drill holes, which can reduce assembly times. By distributing stresses and vibration across the entire bond line, there is less potential for loosening or leaking that can occur when stresses are concentrated at individual fasteners.
Attaining functional cure in one to two hours, the adhesive produces permanent, load-bearing bonds that are resistant to weathering, humidity, temperatures as high as 250ºF and thermal shock. Tensile shear strength is 2,450 psi, with peel strength of more than 80 pli.
