Bal-Tec offers a kit containing 98 nonstandard precision inspection balls. Fourteen sizes are included, with seven balls grouped around each commonly used fractional inch size, which reflect those most frequently requested for inspection applications, the company says. Each group of seven balls contains a standard nominal fractional size ball as well as one each in +0.002", +0.001", +0.0005", +0.0002", -0.001" and -0.002" sizes. Each set of seven balls is packaged together in a plastic vial, and the vials are housed in a plastic tray inside a steel shipping and storage case.
The inspection balls are constructed of chrome alloy steel hardened to 62 HRc for wear resistance. The material has a thermal coefficient of expansion equal to 6.3 microinches per degree Fahrenheit, or 11.4 micrometers per meter Centigrade. According to the company, this matches steel gage blocks and is the same as most iron or steel products.
