LMT Onsrud has added end mills for steel and cast iron to its high-performance end mill range. A combination of both variable-helix and variable-index geometry prevents harmonics and reduces chatter, leaving a quality surface finish on the workpiece, the company says. The end mills’ open-flute form is said to increase chip flow, enabling higher feed rates. The tapered web increases the tools’ toughness, and the variable helix reduces the cutting forces to increase the depth of cut that can be achieved, the company says. Better chip control, higher feed rates and increased depth of cut ensure a higher material removal rate. A combination of the substrate, the cutting edge conditioning and the PVD high-performance coating is said to result in increased tool life.
