Automatically Measure A Rotary Axis
For automatic measurement of a machine’s rotary axis, Heidenhain offers KinematicsOpt, to its iTNC 530 contouring control. This software option, coupled with the company’s touch probe mounted into the CNC machine spindle, is said to increase the accuracy of the control. The automatic measurement function can measure a rotary table, tilting table or swivel head.

Additionally, the control can accommodate as many as 13 axes and a spindle.
The procedure begins after having defined the measurement resolution and the area of each rotary axis. The operator initiates probing of a calibration ball fixed at any position on the machine table. From the measured values, the control calculates the statistical tilting accuracy, with the software option minimizing the spatial error common to the tilting movements.
At the end of the measurement cycle, the machine geometry is saved in the respective machine constraints of the kinematic table. A comprehensive log file recording the actual measured cycle and optimized dispersion (measure of the statistical tilting accuracy), as well as actual compensation values, are also saved.
