MakeTime Startup Enables Capacity Sharing

MakeTime Inc., a Lexington, Kentucky-based startup, offers a capacity-sharing model for manufacturing, inspired by services such as Uber and Airbnb. MakeTime helps match user projects with manufacturing capacity. “Makers” can post projects to the MakeTime marketplace, and machine owners can monetize their idle capacity by selling the excess on the platform. The site bypasses the traditional RFQ process and features eBay-style feedback for makers and machine owners.

“For machine shop owners, the seasonal fluctuation of workloads is and has always been a big problem,” says Drura Parrish, CEO and founder of MakeTime. “Some months are so crazy that jobs have to be turned down or delayed. Some months are slow. Anxiety-inducing slow. Capacity-sharing is a solution for both sides.” Makers gain the capacity to produce, while machine owners are able to balance workload fluctuations.

According to the company, the model also provides a way for makers to purchase time on someone else’s machine while they determine if they have the work to sustain a machine purchase.
