Haas Automation’s Formula One team unveiled its first race car, the VF-1, February 21 to the world motorsport press at the Circuit de Barcelona in Cataluña, Spain, where it began pre-season testing. Its debut race will be the season-opening Australian Grand Prix on March 20, 2016.

The car’s VF nomenclature is derived from the name of a series of Haas vertical machining centers, and its color scheme of gray and red matches that of Haas machines.

“Just as Haas Automation’s CNC machine tools evolve continually, becoming better and more efficient as time goes by, our methodology behind the VF-16 was to make it the best evolution of a good F-1 car,” says Guenther Steiner, team principal. “As we’re a new team, we studied what the successful F-1 teams were doing, so we had a strong baseline for the direction we needed to go with our design.”

Haas is the team’s principal sponsor.
