Four National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) laboratories and the National Security Campus have joined America Makes, the National Additive Manufacturing Innovation Institute, driven by the National Center for Defense Manufacturing and Machining (NCDMM). The five new consortium members are:

  • Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), which focuses on national security challenges, including enhancing national defense, reducing threats from terrorism and maintaining nuclear capacity.
  • Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in strategic science on behalf of national security.
  • National Security Campus, which seeks to protect some of the United States’ security assets through manufacturing non-nuclear mechanical, electronic and engineered materials for national defense systems.
  • Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), the largest science and energy national laboratory in the Department of Energy system with scientific programs focusing on materials, neutron science, energy, high-performance computing, systems biology and national security.
  • Sandia National Laboratories, a multi-program laboratory with R&D responsibilities in national security, energy and environmental technologies, and economic competitiveness.

According to America Makes, the move by the four National Laboratories and the National Security Campus to pursue membership in the consortium fits into the DOE's commitment to advancing additive manufacturing and 3D printing technologies as it relates to the DOE's national energy strategy.
