America Makes, with the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) and GE Global Research (GEGR), announced the awardees of the Open-source Additive Scanning Implementation Strategy (OASIS) Challenge at its annual Technical Review & Exchange (TRX) event. The awards are worth $68,000 in total funding from AFRL.

The goal of the OASIS Challenge was to develop open-source computer codes and algorithms for optimizing scan strategies to advance laser-based powder bed additive manufacturing (AM). This was done to improve the structure, surface and geometric properties of components produced by this AM process.

“Continuing the advancement of open-source software and machine platforms for laser-based powder bed additive manufacturing is a priority for our industry and AFRL, as the proprietary nature of commercial scan strategies inherently pose difficulties,” said America Makes executive director John Wilczynski. “All the winners of the OASIS Challenge developed new and well-synthesized open-source computer codes for outputting laser scan paths that will be instrumental in creating a body of work to be leveraged industry-wide.”

The following project teams were selected as the OASIS Challenge winners:

  • 1st Place, awarded $26,600 in funding: The Ohio State University (OSU)
  • 2nd Place, awarded $16,600 in funding: OSU
  • 3rd Place, awarded $11,600 in funding: Applied Optimization Inc.
  • 1st Honorable Mention, awarded $6,600 in funding: OSU
  • 2nd Honorable Mention, awarded $6,600 in funding: OSU
