I confess to being secretly glad to discover Kansas playing the leadership role described in this article.

Kansas is the heartland, after all—literally so. It sits in the center of a map of the United States. More significantly, our shared cultural imagining seems to see this state as a place from which unassuming heroes rise up to change our sense of what is possible. Kansas native Dorothy, for example, traded the gray of everyday for the color of Oz. Kansas was also where mild-mannered Clark Kent came of age.
