Happy Birthday to “Modern Machine Shop!”

For more than 80 years, “Modern Machine Shop” has worked to connect buyers and sellers of manufacturing technology.

Leaders-In background

June of 1928 was arguably not the best time to start a new business. At that point, few could have had any inkling that roughly a year and a half later, a catastrophic stock market crash would bring the economy to its knees.

Gardner Publications founder Don Gardner was no exception, and the debut issue of “Modern Machine Shop”—his fledgling new company’s flagship offering—rolled off the presses that very month. Through a combination of luck, perseverance and (we like to think) foresight, “Modern” not only survived the tumult of its initial years, but grew to become a go-to source of information for manufacturing technology buyers and sellers alike.

Over the years, the magazine has evolved with its audience. Just as the manually operated machine tool relics of the ‘20s, with their complex systems of gears, levers and pulleys, have been replaced by sophisticated CNC production centers, what used to be solely a print magazine is now a comprehensive content vehicle offering information through multiple channels, including video, an exhaustive website, email newsletters and even this blog.

The other editors and I hope to continue this trend—to continue striving to communicate the latest manufacturing technology developments in new ways. To help us do that effectively, don’t be shy about dropping a line to let us in on anything you think we could be doing differently to serve you better (compliments are also welcome, of course). Send me an email or click the “contact us” tab at the top of the page to contact another editor.

In the meantime, here’s wishing a happy 83rd birthday to “Modern Machine Shop!”
