Creating Custom Pistons Using 3D Laser Scanning Technology
Laser scanning technology enables this racing piston maker design and machine custom sets of pistons in short order.
Piston manufacturer Diamond Racing has developed an innovative method of creating custom pistons quickly and relatively inexpensively. The Clinton Township, Michigan company combines CMM and 3D laser scanning equipment with CNC machining to produce a set of custom forged pistons in a couple of weeks.
The trick is modeling the piston dome. Each engine builder’s cylinder head combustion chamber design is a unique, contoured shape. A mating dome profile must be established to provide adequate clearances as well as offsets to achieve the builder’s performance goals.
