Sunnen’s SV-15 honing machine features a Siemens touchscreen programmable logic controller (PLC) to provide greater convenience, precision and consistency. A real-time display of the bore shape enables the operator to confirm bore straightness and make on-the-fly adjustments to correct taper. The display also confirms the action of the auto-dwell feature, which is said to concentrate honing action in tight spots. The control automatically switches from roughing cycle to finishing cycle for faster processing with the desired finish, geometry and crosshatch angle. One hundred different part setups can be stored in the control, with additional USB storage available. The control eliminates the need for belt/pulley adjustments and gets rid of all push buttons except E-stop, the company says.
The SV-15 can hone bore diameters ranging from 0.750" to 8" (19 to 203 mm) in diameter and up to 11" (279 mm) deep for all types of blocks. With separate spindle and stroker motors (3 hp/2.25 kW and 1 hp/0.75 kW, respectively), the SV-15 can operate using standard Sunnen tools as well as with DH-series diamond honing heads. Variable spindle and stroker speeds — adjustable while in cycle — enable infinite crosshatch angles for any bore diameter and cylinder length combination, the company says. Automatic zero shutoff promotes consistent size on each bore.
The standard multi-position rollover fixture handles most automotive blocks, according to Sunnen. The optional CK-6200 clamping kit expands the range of blocks that can be accommodated. The machine’s honing fluid reservoir/filter system holds 55 gal. (206 L). Removable settling tanks, screens and filter cartridges are designed for easy servicing and replacement.
