MMS Cover Will Be 3D

In September, MMS subscribers by the thousands will look as goofy as this guy.

I am not sure whether any industrial trade magazine has ever done a 3D cover before. At the very least, it’s a historic first for Modern Machine Shop—our September issue, mailing to subscribers soon, features a cover image that pops out of the page when viewed with the 3D glasses that are provided inside the issue.

The full-page lead photo of each feature article also appears in 3D. So do some of the ads.

The reason has to do with Modern Machine Shop’s participation in a special area you’ll want to be sure to visit at IMTS—the Advanced Manufacturing Center. The part on the cover is a Rolls-Royce Trent 900 jet engine fan blade set that will be on display in this area. While the part is live, other experiences in this area of the show will make use of 3D. They include not only a 3D virtual-reality presentation of the Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 jet engine, but also a 3D preview of “The Edge Factor,” a new show coming this fall that will bring CNC machining to an audience outside of manufacturing.
