For CNC Users and Programmers, It’s More than a Newsletter

Mike Lynch’s monthly column, “CNC Tech Talk,” has appeared in Modern Machine Shop magazine since 1990. It’s one of the most popular pages in the magazine, as our readership studies have shown many times. Mike also produces a quarterly newsletter called “The Optional Stop.” If you like Mike’s column, you ought to consider subscribing to his newsletter. It’s got a lot more in each issue than you might expect in a newsletter.
The latest issue, released earlier this month, is a good example. To give you an idea of how much content is in each newsletter, you should know that my paper printout runs eight pages. Of course, it does have news, so it is truly a newsletter. The lead item is about Mike’s new self-study manuals for turning operations, but it's not a sales pitch. Mike explains why he arranged the content of these courses in a certain way, and his insights into training needs are interesting and useful.
The same goes for the following item directed to instructors. His comments about developing class content give you an idea of the challenge instructors are up against. After that comes a Manager’s Insight piece, with good advice for shop supervisors or production managers. The rest of the issue is devoted to shorter, more techy pieces that programmers can really dig into, with topics such as the value of certain custom macros.
