Coolant lubricates a machining process and clears chips. Despite the name, however, it often doesn’t provide much cooling. A very different approach to enhancing tool life involves dramatically cooling the tool—using fluid colder than -300ºF. As this article describes, cryogenic machining might deliver the next dramatic leap forward in tool performance.
