Simplicity in Non-destructive Inspection of Components

Zeiss Industrial offers the compact METROTOM 1 to perform non-destructive quality inspections. The METROTOM 1 is intended to be an entry level solution for small and medium-sized companies that may view computed tomography as too complex.

The METROTOM 1 from Zeiss Industrial Quality Solutions is a compact computed tomography system designed to deliver precise results while staying easy to operate.

Many companies have already come to value the advantages of non-destructive inspection. However, small and medium-sized companies may view computed tomography as too complex and, therefore, miss the opportunity to implement it in their business, according to sources at Zeiss.

With the computed tomography system METROTOM 1, Zeiss developed an entry-level solution that is supposedly even simpler to operate and use for inspections. Users place the parts to be inspected in the system, press the button and then analyze the measurement results. The process, Zeiss notes, is very straightforward and, as a result, little time is required to learn how to use the machine.

From capturing 3D volume data to analyzing it, the software, GOM Volume Inspect, helps to ensure easy operation of the new computed tomography system. It was designed to be an optimized match to the hardware. The latest version is equipped with more volume functions. Investing in additional software for a detailed analysis of the measurement data is not necessary, Zeiss says.

Another benefit to the new product, Zeiss mentions, is that the device shouldn’t require much maintenance. Because of this design, the operating costs should remain low. The compact machine, which is 175 cm wide and 87 cm deep, can be used to measure small to medium-sized parts made of plastic or light metal such as connectors, plastic caps or aluminum castings.

One of Zeiss’ hopes for the METROTOM 1 is that it makes computed tomography available and feasible to more companies through its user-friendly experience with non-destructive inspection.
